FAQ's, Tips & Tricks

Q. WHY IS THIS TEST SUGGESTED AND RECOMMENDED AS AN IMPORTANT PART OF EVERY AUTOMOTIVE SERVICE PROCEDURE?

A.

In today's automotive aftermarket, the stress on CUSTOMER SERVICE is becoming stronger every day. This makes the tools, equipment and service procedures even more valuable to the garage, repair shop, service station, fleet maintenance shop, or radiator shop - the Users!

The mechanic or serviceman MUST be able to detect a problem, and then repair it, or be able to refer the job to a specialty shop for repair - all with confidence in his diagnosis. In the automotive repair/service business, the key to building customer confidence and satisfaction is to get the right job done right, the first time! Time is money; lost time is lost dollars, and lost customer business.

Equally important to the car or truck owner, however, is the damage that can result to both the radiator and the engine if a combustion leak goes undetected. This is, of course, aside from bad engine performance. Leaky or badly adjusted head gaskets, for example, will permit exhaust fumes to enter the cooling system, and sometimes allow coolant to enter the cylinders. Also, undetected combustion leaks in the valve area often cause cracked and loose valve seats.

Q. WHAT HAPPENS THEN?

A.

Exhaust fumes immediately destroy inhibitors in the coolant, and set up an acid condition. This is bad enough, but the coolant will then conduct electricity, and a galvanizing reaction will begin among the various kinds of metals in the cooling system. This will eat away at the radiator and other parts of the system from the inside. If the coolant should also enter the cylinders (which can happen, but fortunately not often) the result will be a poorly running engine, with less life, and coolant contaminating the engine's lubricants. Combustion leaks in the valve area force coolant away during heavy acceleration causing excessive heat build-up. When acceleration stops, the diverted coolant rushes back to the area, resulting in damage to the valve seats.

When a combustion leak is detected and the repair properly made, the engine will run smoother and more economically too! By using the UNIVERSAL Combustion Leak Test on each car or truck that comes in for service or repair, a cracked head or block may be prevented, jobs may be picked up that might otherwise be overlooked, and those expensive and unsatisfactory come-backs will be prevented!

Q. WHEN SHOULD THE UNIVERSAL. COMBUSTION LEAK TEST BE USED?

A.

The specialists in automotive problem diagnosis tell us they use the Combustion Leak Test FIRST, and on every car or truck, to determine if there is an engine or a cooling system problem. In addition, the test should be used before any engine tune-up or overhaul, and before any radiator clean-out job. It should also be used when the condition of the engine is unknown; the engine is hard starting; there is a loss of coolant or overheating; rusty radiator conditions exist; or when cracked block o head gasket problems are suspected. for an immediate diagnosis of _ the exact source of the problem. THIS TAKES THE GUESS-WORK OUT OF GETTING THE JOB DONE RIGHT - THE FIRST TIME!

Q. HOW DOES THE TEST WORK?

A.

If a combustion leak is present, the chemical fluid in the UNIVERSAL tool will turn from blue to yellow in just a minute. The source of the leak can then be easily traced by following the simple operating instructions If the fluid stays blue (test is negative), there is no combustion leak present, and the problem is usually traceable to the cooling system itself.

Q. WHAT DOES THIS MEAN TO THE USERS OF THIS INSTRUMENT AND FLUID- THE GUYS IN THE SHOP?

A.

Simply that through the use of the UNIVERSAL. Combustion Leak Tester, better customer service and repair can be given at a nominal cost. The man using the UNIVERSAL. rapidly becomes known as one who "really knows what he is doing!"

Q. WHAT KIND OF AN INVESTMENT WOULD THE USER NEED TO MAKE IN THE UNIVERSAL COMBUSTION LEAK TESTER AND FLUID?

A.

For the average repair/service operation, a factory recommended minimum order is:

  • 1 UNIVERSAL Kit (test tool, fluid and instructions)
  • 1 UNIVERSAL Fluid (for shop inventory)
  • 1 UNIVERSAL Large Engine Adaptor (for truck repair work, including diesel).

The larger shop, such as an automotive diagnostic center, a busy radiator shop or fleet maintenance operation will need a larger supply of fluid on hand, and consideration should be given to having a Kit at each workbench. THE COST FOR THIS VALUABLE DIAGNOSTIC TOOL AND FLUID IS NOMINAL. The UNIVERSAL truly is the "most effective, least expensive diagnostic tool on the market today!"

Q. COULD THIS SERVICE PROCEDURE CARRY A CHARGE TO THE CAR OR TRUCK OWNER?

A.

Of course! Shops may wish to use this test to build customer confidence and satisfaction, at no charge; however, everyone who uses the UNIVERSAL can logically set up a fair and profitable price for the work done, whether it is simply the test itself, the repair work which follows, or preventive maintenance service. Keep in mind that the car or truck owner is happy to pay for GOOD SERVICE THAT BRINGS PROMPT AND EFFECTIVE RESULTS FOR THE BETTER MAINTENANCE AND OPERATION OF HIS VEHICLE. Through the UNIVERSAL you can give that kind of service, increase your own business and generate additional profits... that's a winning combination for any automotive service/repair business!

Q. WHAT ARE THE APPLICATIONS?

A.

Any combustion engine or generator which is liquid cooled. This includes automobiles, trucks, agricultural equipment, construction equipment, marine engines (with fresh-water cooling), military equipment. etc. The test works equally well for gasoline, diesel, propane, and alcohol fuel.

WHILE YELLOW MEANS PROBLEMS FOR THE MOTORIST, IT MEANS MORE BUSINESS FOR YOU - THE USER OR JOBBER OR W.D. WHO SERVES THE AUTOMOTIVE AFTERMARKET.
